The Pose running technique, formally known as the Pose Method of Running, is a biomechanically driven approach that redefines running as a skill of falling and pulling rather than pushing. This use of gravity as the primary propulsive force distinguishes Pose from conventional running styles that rely on muscular push-off.

3. The Pull

Once the body begins to fall, the support foot is pulled directly upward and under the hips using the hamstring muscles. This “pull” is a quick, compact motion that minimises ground contact time and keeps the stride short and frequent. The emphasis is on lifting the foot, not landing it; the foot lands naturally under the body as a result of the pull and fall, not through active placement. This action reduces braking forces and impact, particularly at the knee, and promotes a cadence of at least 90 strides per minute (180 steps per minute).

Some critics argue that the emphasis on forefoot landing may increase load on the Achilles tendon and calf muscles, potentially leading to injuries such as Achilles tendinopathy or plantar fasciitis in susceptible individuals. Additionally, the claim of a 50% reduction in knee impact, while frequently cited, is based on limited peer-reviewed research and may not generalise to all runners.

From a clinical perspective, the Pose Method may be particularly suitable for runners with a history of knee pain or those seeking to improve running economy.
